Managing Hair Loss

My name’s Kellie. I’m a Mum of two beautiful children.

I’m here to talk about the taboo subject in the hairdressing world NO one ever wants to experience… HAIR LOSS!!

Staggeringly 40% of women experience hair loss by the age of 40, and from my own personal experience I know it can be scary. I still remember the day my hair started falling out, and it fell out in masses. For me, it started as soon as I hit the three-month mark after baby number two. Now almost three years later, some TLC I’m finally starting to get my locks back.

There are many different reasons why we lose our hair. It can be from it’s natural cycle, stress, menopause, rough handling, changes in medication, hormones, diet or even products used. Even some famous celebs like Tyra Banks and Keira Knightly have opened up about suffering from more serious hair loss disorders.

Being a hairdresser, I freaked out when I lost a lot of my hair.

I am going to talk about some of the things we can do to help our hair when it’s at its most vulnerable.

  • Gently brushing your scalp will help stimulate blood flow to promote new growth.

  • Never tie your hair up wet. Think of your hair as a rubber band for a second. When it’s wet it’s stretched to its full capacity. As it dries it needs to be able to shrink back, and if it’s tied up wet, especially wet, it will most likely snap and cause breakage.

  • Using a micro stimulating shampoo will help to encourage hair growth. Oway have a nice one that is made with biodynamic peppermint and leaves your scalp feeling so refreshed. Use this with Oway densifying remedy and you’re ready to combat hair loss.

  • Use treatments often, maybe once to twice a month if your ends are fragile. Oway has one called ‘rebuilding hair mask’ which is great for damaged hair.

  • Use a silk or satin pillowcase. It may sound silly, but cotton can cause friction which can lead to breakage.

  • Get in-salon conditioning treatments done when you visit. We have intense treatments that aren’t available to take home. Take advantage of a beautiful head massage and let us give your hair a five star treatment, your hair will love it.

  • If you don’t know what shampoo or conditioner to use, come in for a free consultation. We will be more than happy to show you the correct shampoo and conditioner for your hair. This can be crucial as using the wrong products won't help at all.

  • If you’re dealing with damaged or split ends as well as hair loss, remember to get regular trims as your hair will continue to grow at the roots, but it won't be able to get any longer as it will continue to split and break from the bottom up.

  • Don’t expect to see instant results. It’s taken me almost three years to get to where I am today. It’s progress, but with extra care it can be done. Good luck!
