Why You Should Not Use Supermarket Box Dye

As a hairstylist, we take on more than what a simple box dye will do for you. Once you sit in our chair we do a while visual assessment on your hair. We look at absolutely everything about your hair. From the texture, your hair’s history, as in what your hair has had done to it before. You may have had previous colours that are underneath your current colour from two years ago..

We also look at the porosity, your natural notes, your unnatural tones and elasticity. All of these things come into our minds when mixing up your colour, and when we create a beautiful look for you.

We test your inspiration colour on all of the above details. We have to take into consideration the formulas that we are going to mix up to create the desired colour for you, along with the length it will take to process and develop.

With a box ‘at home’ colour, it gives you one option. It doesn’t take all of those above factors into consideration. It will not know that your natural undertone may be red, and will more than likely leave you with an orange look, or a root glow.

On the other hand, your hair could be very damaged and it will suck up all the nice honey brown colour you wanted, and turn it into a jet black look which is insanely hard to remove.

We do understand that the box dyes are a cost or convenient thing for some people. However, please remember that we are trained to do our job correctly, and there are many trainee hairdressers out there that aren’t too costly that also need you.

As hairdressers, our biggest goal is to ensure people love their hair. It’s what we do, and it’s what we love. We will also always be more than happy to fix any box dye mistakes!
